Birds naturally convert fruit, oily nuts and insects that they eat into fat to use and to store when food is scarce, so by providing fat balls, you are helping them. Birds need fat for energy, keeping them warm, flying and singing. Garden birds even use fat stores overnight when they are still burning energy to stay alive.

All of our fat balls for birds are supplied net free, because these are a hazard to birds and other wildlife. We have a range of fat ball feeders for sale, so that you never need plastic nets to hang them.

Due to the high quality bird suet used in our fat products, they will become soft and pliable during hot weather, or if exposed to excess heat during delivery and in storage. To return Ark`s suet for birds to normal hardness, simply place in the refrigerator for a short time.

Are suet balls the same as fat balls?

Suet balls and fat balls are very similar but with some vital differences. Suet balls are made from pure animal fat, whilst fat balls can contain a mixture of other ingredients. Generally, suet balls are considered a healthier option for birds, as they have a higher nutritional content and last longer.

What are the best quality fat balls for birds?

The best quality fat balls for birds are those made with suet, as suet provides essential fats and energy for birds. Avoid fat balls with added artificial ingredients and don’t make fat balls at home using leftover cooking fat: both of these options can be harmful to birds. High-quality fat balls may also include seeds, crushed insects, and nuts, all providing extra nutrition for garden birds.

Do squirrels eat fat balls?

To hang fat balls for birds, place them in a suet or fat ball feeder. You can hang the feeder or a bird feeder pole or a tree branch. Make sure the fat balls are secure and easily accessible for the birds by hanging the feeder high off the ground. It’s best to place them in a quiet, sheltered area so that birds feel safe and comfortable to feed. For ground feeding birds such as robins, blackbirds and song thrushes, simply place the fat balls on a bird table.

How to feed fat balls to birds?

You can feed fat balls to birds using a number of methods including hanging feeders, suet cages or by placing them on a bird table. We recommend using cage feeders if you’re trying to attract smaller birds, or squirrel-proof feeders if you want to discourage squirrels.

Can you bulk buy fat balls?

You can buy mass-produced fat balls for birds in bulk. However, the fat balls on offer with Ark Wildlife are made from high quality suet which is best purchased fresh. As fat balls can go mouldy if stored incorrectly, we suggest buying small batches that can be replenished when needed.
