Winter Bird Food

During winter, long cold nights and short days make natural bird food scarce. Frozen ground and water leaves them at serious risk of starvation. Keeping a bird feeder full of energy rich bird food really can make the difference between life and death.

Q: Should I change the bird food I offer in winter time?

A: If the birds visiting are happy with the food you are giving them, don't change - you just might need a bit more!

Q: What are the best bird foods to offer in winter?

A: It's all about energy at this time of year. Peanuts for fat and protein. Black sunflower seeds have great oil content whilst sunflower hearts save the birds having to remove the outer shell. Fatballs and suets are winter essentials providing the energy required for long winter nights.

Q: What else can I do?

A: Ensuring there is fresh water for drinking and bathing is vitally important. Ice-Free for bird baths can help prevent water freezing down to temperatures of -4 degrees.
