About

Details

This nesting box is specifically designed for woodpeckers. Our nesting box has proven successful at attracting woodpeckers due to an extra thick bowl shaped bottom in which the eggs can be laid. It also features a closed entrance the birds need to peck at and open themselves, just as they would in a natural cavity.

To attract woodpeckers, it’s recommended to mount a nest box high up on a mature tree trunk, ideally between 3-5 metres off the ground. Find a shaded woodland area facing away from direct sunlight and prevailing winds. It should also offer a clear line of flight for the birds to access the nest box entrance. Because woodpeckers are early nesters, the best time to put it up is in late autumn or early winter to allow the birds time to find it before nesting season arrives.

This woodpecker nest box includes a side opening door for easy maintenance and inspection.

During winter the nesting box may also be used for protection and makes an ideal shelter for birds during bad weather.

Q: What is drumming regarding woodpeckers?

A: "Drumming" is the official term for pecking for woodpeckers - whether it be pecking for insects in crevices on trees, creating their nests and communicating with other woodpeckers.

Q: What foods attract woodpeckers?

A: The great and lesser spotted woodpeckers are natural insectivores but they also love peanuts and suet products like suet cakes and fatballs. Green woodpeckers are predominately insect eaters, sometimes berries and other plants and are unlikely to be attracted by the bird foods we put out.

Q: What is the diameter of the entrance hole?

A: The diameter is 50mm.
