Swallow Nest Box Bowl

The Swallow Bowl Nest Box is constructed in WoodStone for extra long life. With permanent mounting on a wooden frame, it will not fall in dry weather, smooth walls or from vibration. Being self-contained and ready for use, swallows can occupy the nests immediately on return from their winter stay in Africa. Swallows are popular birds and are regarded as the bringers of good luck. They feed on flying insects and prefer to hunt in the immediate vicinity of their nesting sites. After breeding they will follow the warm weather and airborne insects southwards in early autumn, eventually overwintering in the southern tip of Africa.

Swallows arrive in the UK during April and the first priority is finding a suitable nesting site where they form their famous nest bowls out of mud and saliva. They seek out old buildings such as farm buildings and stables with open access and dry timbers. However, these building are now in short supply and modern building techniques do not favour swallows nesting preferences. Fortunately swallows will readily adopt special open bowl type nest boxes when suitably sited in an enclosed area such as a porch, outbuilding, garage or stable.

The nest bowl should be sited inside the building with easy access for the birds via an open door or window. The male swallows arrive first and when they find a suitable building, will circle above his chosen site, singing to attract females. It is increasingly difficult for swallows to find suitable nest-building material in our modern world. Permanent puddles with soft muddy edges are in short supply and the ones they do find, are often of poor quality. Additional problems include the walls of buildings are nowadays often very smooth and as a result, nests tend to fall down, sometimes with the nestlings inside.

Siting:
Locate the nest in an outbuilding with reasonable open access such as a barn, garage, or general outbuilding preferably at a level not subject to disturbance.

Features:
Attractive natural WoodStone finish, pre-drilled ready to be installed, will not crack or fall down.

Helpful – Caring – Responsible

When Sean McMenemy started Noah’s Ark Wildlife Gardens as a landscaping business back in 1991, little did he know what a huge impact he was to make on the bird feeding and garden wildlife industries over the following decades.

Over 30-years later he still brings the same passion for garden wildlife to work every day, so it’s no wonder we’re so highly respected. Our expertise lies in providing carefully selected natural food and products that offer significant benefits to wildlife – with the type of customer service only true enthusiasm for our subject can bring.

Meeting a demand for natural, nutritious wildlife food

In those early days, Sean constantly received requests for help in making his clients’ natural gardens more wildlife friendly. Requests for bird food encouraged Sean to research bird feeding, and at that time he found problems in the market with quality and service. He knew then the only way forward was to create his own natural, nutritious range of wildlife food and present it in a way which benefited both the wildlife and the customer. Ark Wildlife was born.

The company has steadily grown since those early days, now standing as one of the UK’s largest independent suppliers of bird food and garden wildlife products, despatching over 500 parcels per day across the United Kingdom.

Exceptional service, because we care more than we can put into words

No matter how large our business is now, Ark Wildlife aims to combine the convenience of an online mail order outlet with the caring, helpful touch of a specialist shop. Our people make the difference. We take great pride in the energy, commitment and enthusiasm of our ever-growing workforce, still led by our inspirational driving force, Sean. If you read through some of Sean’s blog posts you will see how knowledgeable he is and how much he cares for the welfare of our wildlife.
