About

Details

What is it?
These mason bee tubes are clean drilled to make them the perfect habitats for mason and leafcutter bees. Ideal for use as a shelter or during the winter months, bees will lay their eggs in these tubes, keeping the vital population alive.

How does it help?
We all know how critically important bees are to the environment — mason bees are excellent pollinators, keeping our trees, shrubs, flowers, fruit and veg thriving. These tubes are a safe habitat for bees, where they can lay eggs and stay safe in extreme weather. They attract a wide diversity of bees to your garden, providing a home for one of our most important insects.

The tubes come in a range of widths from 5mm up to 15mm, with the middle sizes between 6mm and 12mm being best for breeding solitary bees. From March to August, the mason and leafcutter bees will lay eggs in the tubes. Keep them well-insulated throughout the winter and the bees will emerge the following spring.

Sean says:
“The importance of pollinating insects and gentle solitary bees cannot be overestimated in a successful wildlife garden. Not only do they help my garden itself flourish, but ensure that I`m making a vital contribution to the surrounding environment.”

Q: Do I need to add leaves or pollen in the bee tubes or do the bees do this?

A: All you need do is make sure the back of the tubes are tight against a solid surface or blocked off in some way and mount them on a south facing wall or in an orchard (depending on species). The bees will collect the nectar, leaves and mud themselves and it's fascinating watching them work.
