About

Details

What is it?
This house is built from natural sustainable larch timber with felt base and roof for waterproofing and is suitable for all wild hedgehogs in the UK during summer and winter (hibernation) occupation. It is a design approved by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and made from untreated natural timber from UK sustainable forests. The wood is not treated in any way because larch contains high tannin levels which naturally preserve the wood. If you prefer you can paint the outside with a suitable water-based colourant/preservative but please ensure these are wildlife friendly. It is not necessary for the longevity of this habitat.

How does it Help?
Hedgehog numbers have been in decline for many years and gardens are an invaluable resource for their future survival. The Larch Hedgehog House is built to last and provides protection from both the weather and predators, keeping the occupants safe and warm inside.

The house arrives with the predator tunnel tucked inside but you slide this out into the final position and then simply place the hedgehog house in a quiet, dry corner of your garden. It may be used by hedgehogs during the summer, as a lie-up, for breeding and is suitable for winter hibernation as well. We would always recommend adding additional insulation over any hedgehog house you suspect is occupied by a hibernating hog.

Sean Says:
β€œWe’re delighted to offer such a high-quality hedgehog house at such a competitive price. This hedgehog house will provide years of maintenance free service and could be home to generations of hedgehogs in your garden.”

Q: Can you give me some advice on where to put a hedgehog house in my garden?

A: Hedgehogs readily take up residence in appropriate hedgehog houses and for the best chance of success they should be situated in a quiet part of the garden, preferably against a wall or fence out of direct sunlight. Make sure the entrance is sheltered to avoid being exposed to drafts and strong winds.
Hedgehog houses may be used for winter hibernation, throughout the summer as lie-ups or, if you're very lucky, by a pregnant female making a nest to have her young in June.

Q: What should I put inside a hedgehog house?

A: If you are hoping that a hedgehog will take up residence - they naturally use leaves, grass, straw and twigs for nesting. A little bedding material will encourage any potential occupant but do not go overboard - finding and transporting the material to the nest and building the nest are a key part of their natural behaviour in the wild and should be encouraged.

Q: How do you clean hedgehog houses?

A: Remove and destroy all old bedding material and clean the interior with boiling water and/or scrubbing with slightly soapy water or veterinary approved disinfectant. Allow drying to take place before reseating the roof and then add new, dry, clean hedgehog house bedding ready for the next occupant.
