What is it?
This is no ordinary hedgehog house. Designed by Sean McMenemy following years of research and assisting hedgehog carers across the UK, this hog house is packed with practical features. From the hinged roof that allows you to keep an eye on your spiky occupant to the Stokbord that provides excellent insulation, this house is made with the well-being of hedgehogs in mind. No assembly necessary.

How does it help?
Providing the hedgehogs in your garden with a safe space to nest, breed and hibernate is vital to protecting this wonderful animal. Fully insulated and watertight, this hedgehog house will provide a warm home for prickly occupants for many years to come. Clever design features such as the internal tunnel to prevent predator access and ventilation at the rear of the house to remove excess condensation all provide huge benefits for the hedgehogs visiting your garden.

Sean says:
“Damp has always been an issue with hedgehog houses, and while hogs themselves don`t seem overly concerned, I like to give them the best home I can. After many modifications, this box is ticking all the boxes, practical, purposeful and dry.”

Helpful – Caring – Responsible

When Sean McMenemy started Noah’s Ark Wildlife Gardens as a landscaping business back in 1991, little did he know what a huge impact he was to make on the bird feeding and garden wildlife industries over the following decades.

Over 30-years later he still brings the same passion for garden wildlife to work every day, so it’s no wonder we’re so highly respected. Our expertise lies in providing carefully selected natural food and products that offer significant benefits to wildlife – with the type of customer service only true enthusiasm for our subject can bring.

Meeting a demand for natural, nutritious wildlife food

In those early days, Sean constantly received requests for help in making his clients’ natural gardens more wildlife friendly. Requests for bird food encouraged Sean to research bird feeding, and at that time he found problems in the market with quality and service. He knew then the only way forward was to create his own natural, nutritious range of wildlife food and present it in a way which benefited both the wildlife and the customer. Ark Wildlife was born.

The company has steadily grown since those early days, now standing as one of the UK’s largest independent suppliers of bird food and garden wildlife products, despatching over 500 parcels per day across the United Kingdom.

Exceptional service, because we care more than we can put into words

No matter how large our business is now, Ark Wildlife aims to combine the convenience of an online mail order outlet with the caring, helpful touch of a specialist shop. Our people make the difference. We take great pride in the energy, commitment and enthusiasm of our ever-growing workforce, still led by our inspirational driving force, Sean. If you read through some of Sean’s blog posts you will see how knowledgeable he is and how much he cares for the welfare of our wildlife.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you give me some advice on where to put a hedgehog house in my garden?

Hedgehogs readily take up residence in appropriate hedgehog houses and for the best chance of success they should be situated in a quiet part of the garden, preferably against a wall or fence out of direct sunlight. Make sure the entrance is sheltered to avoid being exposed to drafts and strong winds.
Hedgehog houses may be used for winter hibernation, throughout the summer as lie-ups or, if you're very lucky, by a pregnant female making a nest to have her young in June.

What should I put inside a hedgehog house?

If you are hoping that a hedgehog will take up residence - they naturally use leaves, grass, straw and twigs for nesting. A little bedding material will encourage any potential occupant but do not go overboard - finding and transporting the material to the nest and building the nest are a key part of their natural behaviour in the wild and should be encouraged.

How do you clean hedgehog houses?

Remove and destroy all old bedding material and clean the interior with boiling water and/or scrubbing with slightly soapy water or veterinary approved disinfectant. Allow drying to take place before adding new, dry, clean hedgehog house bedding and reseating the roof ready for the next occupant.

Can I put food and water in the hedgehog house?

We do not recommend putting food inside the house if you are hoping for a hedgehog tp take up residence. Food (and essential water) should be placed a few feet away from the house to prevent other interested parties from disturbing any hogs inside.
