Details

The Dome Hedgehog House provides hedgehogs and other mammals with a safe haven from the many hazards they face on a daily basis, such as gardening tools, domestic pets and other predators.

Comprising a round painted steel frame (mesh free) with a water-proofed roof lining, it is covered with a decorated natural rattan finish. As the exterior is made from natural materials - appearance can vary due to seasonal availability.

The Dome Hedgehog House has plenty of space inside and can accommodate family groups such as a mother and hoglets. Able to contain both a feeding bowl and water dish this shelter can also be used as a covered feeding station.

With a small entrance tunnel designed to deter predators, the Dome is ideal for shelter, but can be used for hibernation if additional brushwood cover is provided over the Dome in winter.

Place under a hedge, large shrub or similar concealed place, out of the prevailing wind, with leaves or foliage around the house for further camouflage. Add some dry grass or leaves inside as nesting material.

The Dome can be anchored down with tent or garden pegs for extra security.

Q: Can you give me some advice on where to put a hedgehog house in my garden?

A: Hedgehogs readily take up residence in appropriate hedgehog houses and for the best chances of success they should be situated in a quiet part of the garden, preferably against a wall or fence out of direct sunlight. Make sure the entrance is sheltered to avoid being exposed to drafts and strong winds.
Hedgehog houses may be used for winter hibernation, throughout the summer as lie-ups or, if you're very lucky, by a pregnant female making a nest to have her young in June.

Q: How do I anchor down the Dome Hedgehog House?

A: The best way to secure the house is to use some metal pegs. Either tent pegs or the pegs used to hold garden mesh in place.

Q: Is this Hedgehog House suitable for hibernation?

A: No, as it stands the Dome Hedgehog House is designed as a shelter/retreat and NOT suitable for hibernation. You can however raise the shelter off the floor and cover it with further insulating material ie carpet, tarpaulin etc to add additional insulation for the colder months.
